But one worth keeping in every instance? Any kind of sniper rifle you come across. This is not Tomb Raider where you have a set selection of guns you’re keeping and upgrading over time. There are a number of solid weapons in Uncharted 4, and as per usual, you will find yourself picking them up and dropping them by the dozen. After that, kill the guys with grenade launchers so you don’t have to roll around like you’re playing The Division. After that, you’ll want to kill the heavies, as the armored enemies will march straight toward you wielding shotguns or miniguns and if you let them get to close, you will die. Fortunately their laser sights make them incredibly easy to spot, and you can actually kill most of them with the base pistol, even at range.

Snipers are priority one, as they have the ability to take you from full health to almost dead with one shot. Once you “unlock” all the enemy types, there’s a certain order to kill them which will help you not get murdered. The further you progress in the game, the tougher enemy encounters will become. Kill Order: Snipers>Heavies>Grenadiers>Everyone Else Enemies drop grenades like candy, so do not be stingy in throwing them whenever you’re in a jam, or even as an opener.ħ. A grenade can multikill normal enemies hiding behind cover (as well as destroy cover itself) and it can instantly shred the armor of a heavy approaching you. Obviously grenades are nothing new in Uncharted, or action games like this in general, but in Uncharted 4 they seem particularly effective (note: all my combat tips are for normal difficulty). I expect it will still garner some controversy, but I won’t say any more on that for now. The “final boss” is a variant on this concept, but it’s much more hands-on. It is incredibly tough to “lose” these segments, and they’re more like cutscenes than actual gameplay.

There are a number of fights that you just kind of have to blunder through, and no matter what you do, you will arrive at a preordained series of events. This was one aspect of the game I was a bit disappointed with, as Uncharted 4 keeps things kind of on the rails during fist-fight segments with “bosses” in order to ensure everything looks cinematic. Read them all, and you will like the story that much more. This is bolstered by a number of letters and documents you can find as you play, some of which tell the story of other treasure hunters trying to find the lost gold, others of which are from Avery’s era directly. While it sounds relatively straightforward, the plot twists and turns as time goes on, and by the end, it was one of my favorite “historical mystery” plotlines ever, including the likes of Indiana Jones. This time, it’s about the pirate Captain Avery and his lost stolen treasure. This is the first Uncharted game where I was not only hooked by the likable lead characters, but the actual “legend” itself. Everything looks amazing, and if you’re simply sprinting through every area to try and reach the next objective, you are going to miss what makes the game great. There is no vista in this game that isn’t breathtaking, whether it’s Scotland or Italy or Madagascar or hell, a dark basement or collapsed hut. Just stop and look around, wherever you are. Some of this is boring (climbing in particular gets very tiresome), but these segments give you the chance to experience Uncharted 4’s best asset, its map. For the rest of it, you’re walking, climbing or puzzle-solving. I’d say only 20% of your time spent holding a controller actually involves shooting anything. While Uncharted is generally known as an action-heavy series, as I said in my review, I’m not sure how true that is.

Some segments have multiple ways forward rather than one straight path, and some encounters like the boat and car chapters are almost free-roaming. At that point, you can figure out a creative way to get up yourself, or, if you wait long enough, they will throw down a crate for you to jump on. In one area, for instance, you help a teammate up to a high ledge. You would not be wrong to describe previous Uncharted games as “relentlessly linear,” and while that’s true for the most part in Uncharted 4, there are certain segments where the game gives you a bit more freedom than usual. I’m a bit perplexed why this was in the game at all, but it’s not really a big deal either way.

I can probably count the number of total dialogue choice segments in the game on one hand, so don’t worry, Uncharted really isn’t changing its core storytelling structure. They may lead to a different line or two from the characters, but they have no actual weight on the story. What was not made clear was that these dialogue choices really don’t do much of anything at all. In the lead-up to the game, much ado was made about the fact that you now had dialogue options in Uncharted like it was Fallout or Mass Effect.
